This week was awesome! Kyle really knows his stuff. He's a bit of an outside-the-box thinker, but it obviously works really well because people seek his services avidly. He has a lot of wisdom and he gives us opportunities to contribute so that we can learn to be confident and wise ourselves.
He gave us a handout from a mentor and role model of his (again, another unconventional guy) about how to maximize the effectiveness of sport exercise and determine if a movement is helpful or not for athletics. There are a number of dynamics it lists, each with an arbitrary spectrum ranging from non-functional (and therefore not beneficial for sport) and functional (and effective at improving sport performance). Here is the handout:

I love this handout because it really illustrates a concept that Kyle continually tries to instill in us - the K.I.S.S. principle. Keep It Simple Stupid. The bottom line, according to what Kyle has taught us, is; does the movement you're having the athlete do 1) provide benefit for their sport, 2) mimic the conditions and dynamics of their sport, and 3) use muscle synergy to combine movements into beneficial and effective motion. He helps us understand this by asking us to contribute and select exercises and reps and sets for the athletes that exercise while we are there. He also has us demonstrate movements, practice movements for personal experience, and observe form of individuals to help us understand proper mechanics and form. Overall, this is proving to be a wildly beneficial experience.
